Michael started studying opera at UBC in 2006, with voice teacher Peter Barcza. He sang in the University Singers Choir directed by Bruce Pullan for two years, appeared as Don Alhambra in The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan, and has performed several times with both the UBC and Vancouver Opera chorus.

Throughout 2009, Michael toured B.C. as the Botanist in Vancouver Opera in Schools production of Jack Pine by Veda Hille. In May he was invited to Scotland and gave a recital at the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival. Last November, he won the Western Canada district of the Met Auditions.
